Ivy Prep Academy

We will be covering all the components of the Common Core Standards for English and Language Arts. In addition, we will be going much more in depth on each standard, since schools often don’t have the time or the bandwidth to address them sufficiently. What we cover is not only English but Literacy which is the art of reading and writing effectively across all content areas, including science, social studies and math.

I have written and presented extensively on the efficacy of problem posing education, where students actually use the skills they are taught in a hands on manner so that they internalize and apply those skills in a real world setting. This is why students will be reading, writing, publishing and presenting their work, rather than merely doing worksheets or taking quizzes.

I will however be periodically assessing students to make sure they are understanding and mastering the materials. My goal is take each student from their current starting point all the way through to successful college entrance and admission, through constant practice and foundation building in literacy and creating opportunities for debate, public speaking, and community service.

Students of the academy will excel not only in English but in all academic subjects as a result of the deeper comprehension, analysis and writing skills they will gain from the classes. I have spent the last decade training teachers at the university level on how to teach content literacy in every subject.

The critical thinking skills they will develop here will serve them in good stead not only in school but in college and beyond. By the end of the program, they will also be published authors, with several published pieces.
