Hema Sharma is a native of Chennai, India where she started dancing Bharatanatyam at the age of 8 under the tutelage of Kancheepuram Gnanaprakasam. She is also well-versed in other Indian dance forms such as Kuchipudi, Mohini Attam, Kathak and folk dances. She holds the titles of Natyaratna and Natyakalaratna. She has extensive training and experience working with renowned artistes, like Padmashri Adyar K. Lakshman and the Dhananjayans. She made her public debut in 1963 and has performed at several venues in India and the USA. She is now well-recognized as a teacher and has students from varying ethnic backgrounds. Hema Sharma has been the Ethnic Commissioner representing India on the Mayor's Ethnic Enrichment Commission for 25 years and especially enjoys teaching younger generations about Indian culture.

Nritya was established in Kansas City in 1988 by Hema Sharma at the insistence of several community members wishing to promote classical Indian dance. And preserve the ancient culture of India through the performing arts such as dance, music, theater, and other related arts. In the Greater Kansas City area, Nritya is recognized by: The Mayor's Ethnic Enrichment Commission, The Nelson Atkins Museum,The Shawnee Mission, Blue Valley & Kansas City Missouri School Districts, The India Association of Kansas City, The Gujarathi Samaj Nritya has been on the Kansas Arts Commission's Arts on Tour Roster since 2006.

Nritya School of Indian Dance and Music, established in 1988, is a non-profit dance company located in Overland Park, Kansas. Nritya offers instruction in the following: Bharathanatyam, Indian classical dance style from south India, Indian folk dance, Yoga, Instrumental music (Harmonium and Keyboard), Vocal Carnatic Music. Nritya offers classes to various levels of students and ranging skill sets. We offer lessons to younger kids as young as 4 years or to a serious dancer who wishes to pursue dance as a career or to an adult who wishes to learn dance for passion and fun. Our classes are tailored to fit your needs. But we focus on only one criteria – teach the students as perfectly as possible. We focus on the basics very devotedly. We believe the foundations are important for any learning. Dance, music and theater activities will help the artistic abilities of a person and also develop focus, discipline and imagination. As the famous Albert Einstein, who once said – “Everything is in imagination” -was himself a great artist. We welcome you to learn, understand, enjoy and impress others through the performing arts from India. Our doors are always open to any keen student, who is interested in learning Bharathanatyam, Odissi, Folk, Creative Fusion, and Carnatic music – Keyboarding and vocal, and other fine arts. Guru Hema Sharma is a native of Chennai, India, where she started dancing (Bharathanatyam) at the age of 8 under the tutelage of Kancheepuram Gnaprakasam. She pursued advanced training under such renowned gurus as Padmashri Adyar K. Lakshman in Nattuvangam and Srimati Shanta and V.P. Dhananjayan in dance. She is also well versed in other Indian dance forms such as Kuchipudi, Mohini Attam, Kathak, and folk dances. Over the course of her career as a dancer, Hema has been a dedicated performer, choreographer, teacher, and community volunteer, donating her time to spread the arts and culture of India throughout Kansas City.
