Frequently Asked Questions - Nehal Music School

    • 1. I am an absolute beginner. I don't even know what "Sa Re Ga Ma" means. Can I still join?

Yes, absolutely. That is exactly who our Beginner Foundation course is for. We start from the absolute basics: what is a note (swara), how to sit, how to breathe, and how to produce a clean sound. We do not assume any prior knowledge. Many of our most successful advanced students started knowing nothing.

    • 2. How is Hindustani classical vocal different from Bollywood singing lessons?

Hindustani classical is the grammar. It teaches you pitch accuracy, rhythm, vocal stamina, and ornamentations (gamak, meend). Bollywood singing is the application. It teaches you how to sing specific film songs with emotion and style. We strongly recommend classical as a foundation because it makes Bollywood singing much easier. However, you can take only Bollywood if you prefer.

    • 3. I am an adult (40+). Am I too old to start singing?

No. Never. The myth that you must start as a child is false. Adults have better focus, discipline, and emotional depth. While children may pick up physical coordination faster, adults understand lyrics and emotion at a deeper level. We have successfully trained students in their 60s and 70s. You are never too old to find your voice.

    • 4. Do I need to buy a harmonium or tabla at home for practice?

For vocal students, you do not need an instrument immediately. We provide a harmonium in class. For home practice, you can use a free smartphone app (like Tanpura Drones or Riyaz App). For tabla students, you will eventually need a practice set. We will advise you on affordable, quality sets ($150–$300). For keyboard/guitar, we can recommend student-grade instruments ($100–$200). We never pressure you to buy expensive gear.

    • 5. Do you offer online classes for students who live outside Fremont?

Yes. Our live online program via Zoom is very robust. We use multiple camera angles (face, hands, feet for tabla). We also record every session for you to review. Students from Texas, Washington, and even London have successfully learned Hindustani vocal and tabla online with us. The quality is 90% as good as in-person, and the convenience is 200% better.

    • 6. My child is very energetic and cannot sit still. Will they survive a music class?

Yes, but we recommend starting with tabla or kids music program. Tabla requires physical movement (hand percussion) which channels that energy productively. The structured counting (taal) also builds focus. After 3-6 months of tabla, many children develop the sitting stamina to add vocal classes. We do not force young children to sit still for an hour. We build up to it.

    • 7. What is the difference between a "taan" and a "murki"?

A taan is a fast, sweeping run of notes across the scale (like a vocal sprint). It requires speed and breath control. A murki is a quick, tiny ornamentation (like a vocal trill or turn) that decorates a single note or short phrase. You will learn both in our intermediate and advanced courses. Think of taan as a highway drive and murki as a quick flick of the wrist.

    • 8. Can I learn to sing if I have a cold or seasonal allergies?

Yes, but with modifications. Allergies affect the throat and sinuses. We will teach you nasal rinses, steam inhalation techniques, and vocal warm-ups that are gentle on irritated cords. You will also learn which raags are easier to sing when congested (avoid high taans, focus on mid-register bhajans). We work with your body, not against it.

    • 9. How long does it take to learn a complete raag?

For a beginner, learning to sing a simple raag (like Raag Bhopali) at a basic level (simple bandish, basic taan) takes about 3-4 months of weekly lessons. To master a raag (including vilambit khayal, complex taans, and improvisation) takes 1-2 years. This is a deep art form. We will set realistic milestones so you feel progress at every stage.

    • 10. Do you teach Western singing (pop, jazz, classical) or only Indian?

We specialize in Indian vocal styles (Hindustani classical, Bhajan, Bollywood). For instrumental music, we teach keyboard/piano and guitar which include Western scales and songs (pop, rock, classical piano). If you want Western vocal (opera, jazz standards), we recommend a different specialist. We stay in our lane of excellence.

With a teaching philosophy centered on patience, consistency, and individualized attention, students receive instruction that supports their unique learning journey while encouraging a lifelong appreciation for music.

Hindustani Classical and Semi-Classical Vocal Training

A strong foundation is essential for every singer. Students are guided through the principles of Hindustani classical music, learning the techniques and concepts that help build vocal strength, musical understanding, and artistic expression.

Training may include:

  • Swar and voice development exercises
  • Alankars and vocal practice techniques
  • Raga exploration and application
  • Taal and rhythm understanding
  • Classical and semi-classical compositions
  • Improvisation and creative expression
  • Performance preparation and stage confidence

Lessons are structured to help students progress steadily while developing a deeper understanding of Indian musical traditions.

Bhajans, Ghazals, Shlokas and Devotional Music

For many students, music is also a way to stay connected to cultural and spiritual traditions. Nehal Music School offers instruction in devotional and expressive forms of Indian music, allowing students to explore different styles while strengthening their vocal abilities.

Students can learn and develop skills in:

  • Bhajans and devotional songs
  • Shloka recitation and pronunciation
  • Ghazal singing
  • Light classical and semi-classical forms
  • Fusion-based vocal expression

This diverse approach allows learners to experience various genres while building a versatile musical foundation.

Personalized Learning for Every Student

No two students learn in exactly the same way. Some may wish to pursue classical music seriously, while others may simply want to improve their singing skills or learn traditional songs. Lessons are adapted to individual goals, experience levels, and learning styles, creating an environment where students feel encouraged and motivated.

Beginners receive step-by-step instruction that focuses on fundamentals, while experienced learners benefit from advanced guidance designed to refine technique, expression, and performance skills.

Music Education Beyond Singing

Learning music involves much more than mastering melodies. Regular training helps students improve concentration, discipline, listening skills, memory, and self-confidence. Through consistent practice and constructive feedback, students gain valuable skills that often extend into other areas of their academic, professional, and personal lives.

The learning environment is designed to be supportive and engaging, helping students develop confidence while enjoying the process of musical growth.

Learn from an Experienced Performer, Composer and Educator

Nehal Music School is led by an accomplished vocalist, performer, composer, and teacher with years of experience guiding students across different age groups and skill levels. The emphasis is not only on technical excellence but also on helping students understand the emotion, meaning, and artistry behind every musical piece.

Students benefit from thoughtful instruction that combines traditional learning methods with a practical and approachable teaching style, making music education both effective and enjoyable.

Vocal Workshops and Performance Development

In addition to regular lessons, students have opportunities to strengthen their musical abilities through focused learning experiences and performance-oriented training. These sessions help learners become more comfortable presenting their skills, understanding musical interpretation, and developing stage presence.

Performance preparation is approached with encouragement and guidance, allowing students to build confidence while showcasing their progress.
