About Finest Indian Music Academy

Ustad Irshad Khan is the founder/president of Universal Academy for Musicians. USA and Canada's leading and authentic resource centre for learning North Indian Music. Professional and Beginners train in the traditional Guru-Shishya Parampara style. Now accepting students for our E-Classes. (Open for all ages). In the sixteenth century, musicians in the royal courts of India delighted their patrons with sounds of the Sitar. Hundreds of years later, a descendant of that legendary musical lineage makes his home and founded his music academy in Mississauga, Ontario Canada and Mumbai India, and its branch in Rochester (upstate New York). Irshad Khan is a member of the eighth generation of the Imdad Khani Gharana (school) of Sitar playing, propagating not only his ancestral heritage, but Indian classical music in general. As a cultural ambassador, Irshad strives to preserve the Guru-shishya Parampara, the Indian oral tradition of one-on-one instruction. With the support of music lovers, Irshad hopes to implement his vision of expanding his increasing student base and enlist local and international talent to offer classes in Sitar, vocal, tabla, harmonium, guitar and music theory. Online music lessons are also offered through Skype and Facetime. https://www.e-desinews.com/may-2022/spotlight-a-close-encounter-of-the-exhilarating-kind

Frequently Asked Questions - Finest Indian Music Academy

    • 1. I am an absolute beginner. I do not know what "sa re ga ma" means. Can I still join?

Yes. That is exactly who our Beginner Foundation course is for. We start from the absolute basics: what is a note (swara), how to produce a clear sound (for vocal), how to hold the instrument (for sitar/tabla), how to count taal (teentaal). We do not assume any prior knowledge. Many of our most successful advanced students started knowing nothing. The only requirement is commitment to daily practice (at least 15-30 minutes).

    • 2. What is the difference between Hindustani and Carnatic music? Which do you teach?

We teach Hindustani (North Indian) classical music. The differences are significant: (a) Hindustani uses a different raag structure (Carnatic uses "melakarta" system). (b) Hindustani has more Persian/Arabic influence (from the Mughal era). (c) The instruments are different: sitar, sarod, tabla (Hindustani) vs. veena, mridangam (Carnatic). (d) Hindustani places more emphasis on improvisation (alap, jor, jhala). Both are beautiful and rigorous. We specialize in Hindustani. If you are looking for Carnatic vocal or veena, we are not the right fit.

    • 3. Do I need to buy my own sitar or tabla before starting?

No. For the first few lessons, you can use our rental instruments (limited availability, first come first served). For sitar, we have student-sized sitars (smaller, lighter, easier for beginners). For tabla, we have practice sets. We will guide you on when to purchase your own instrument (typically after 2-3 months, when you are committed). We will recommend student-quality instruments at fair prices (we do not sell instruments; we give you a list of trusted vendors). Do not buy a cheap "decorative" sitar from Amazon. They are unplayable. We will save you from that mistake.

    • 4. How much daily practice (riyaaz) is required?

For beginners: 15-30 minutes per day, 5 days a week. Consistency is more important than duration. For intermediate: 45-60 minutes per day. For advanced: 2+ hours per day. We will assign specific riyaaz exercises (alankars, taan patterns, kaidas). Without riyaaz, you will not progress. Our teachers can tell immediately if you have practiced. This is not a hobby where you can "wing it." Classical music demands discipline. We are honest about this upfront.

    • 5. Do you teach children as young as 5 years old?

Yes, but with limitations. For vocal, we typically start at age 6 or 7, when the child can focus for 30 minutes and has basic language skills. For tabla, we start at age 5 (the physical coordination is good, and the bols (syllables) are fun to say). For sitar, we start at age 7 or 8 (the instrument requires finger strength and sitting still). For younger children (ages 3-5), we offer a parent-toddler music class (group setting, rhythm games, call-and-response singing). This builds a foundation without forcing a child to sit still for 30 minutes.

    • 6. I am an adult (40+). Am I too old to start learning sitar?

No. Adults have advantages over children: (a) You understand discipline and practice. (b) You are paying for the lessons yourself, so you are motivated. (c) You have life experience to bring to the emotional expression (bhava) of the music. Yes, children may pick up physical coordination faster. But adults often progress faster in the first year because they practice consistently and ask intelligent questions. We have successfully taught students in their 60s. You are never too old to find your swara.

    • 7. What is the difference between a "taan" and a "murki"?

A taan is a fast, sweeping run of notes across a scale (or within a raag). It is like a vocal sprint. It requires speed, breath control (for vocal), and precise fingerwork (for sitar). A murki is a quick, tiny ornamentation—a rapid flick of a few notes. It is like a vocal trill or a quick turn. Murkis decorate a single note or a short phrase. Think of taan as a long, fast highway drive. Think of murki as a quick wrist flick. You will learn both in our intermediate and advanced courses.

    • 8. Can I learn Bollywood singing without learning classical music?

Yes, we offer Bollywood singing lessons that do not require classical training. However, we strongly recommend that you learn at least the basics of classical vocal (swara, alankars, one simple raag) because it will make your Bollywood singing much better. Classical training gives you pitch accuracy, breath control, and the ability to sing difficult phrases (like the fast taans in Arijit Singh songs). You can take only Bollywood, but most of our Bollywood students eventually add classical because they see the benefits.

    • 9. Do you teach Western music (piano, guitar, pop singing)?

No. We specialize exclusively in Indian classical music (Hindustani vocal, sitar, tabla, harmonium, bhajan). We do not teach piano, guitar, drums, or Western pop/jazz singing. We stay in our lane of excellence. If you want Western music, we will recommend other teachers in the Rochester area. Do not ask our sitar teacher to teach you "Stairway to Heaven."

    • 10. How do I know if I am ready for a rangapravesham (solo debut)?

A rangapravesham (vocal) or aranganam (instrumental) is a formal solo debut concert, typically lasting 2-3 hours, accompanied by live tabla and harmonium. You are ready when: (a) You have studied for at least 5-7 years (for children) or 3-5 years (for dedicated adults). (b) You have mastered at least 10-12 raags (including vilambit and drut khayal for vocal, or alap/jor/jhala/gat for sitar). (c) Your guru (teacher) says you are ready. (d) You have the financial resources to rent a hall, hire accompanists, and arrange logistics (we guide you through this). It is a major milestone, not a casual recital. Many students never do a rangapravesham, and that is fine. It is optional, not required.
