Rated 5.0 My daughter has been learning Bharatnatyam at Nrityalina Center for Performing Arts , Edison center for more than 3 years, and it has been a wonderful journey. The teachers are very professional, caring, and talented. They not only teach dance beautifully but also focus on discipline, confidence, and character building. The environment truly inspires children to develop a passion for dance and enjoy every step of learning. We are very happy with the progress and highly recommend Nrityalina to all parents who want their kids to learn dance in the best way.

Rated 5.0 We had a wonderful experience with my daughter’s journey for Bharatanatyam with Guru Paromita! The teacher is extremely knowledgeable, patient, and dedicated to ensuring that each student understands the techniques, expressions, and the cultural depth behind every movement. The classes are well-structured, starting from fundamentals and gradually moving into more advanced pieces. What I appreciate most is the balance between discipline and encouragement—students are motivated to perform their best while also enjoying the art form. The environment is very welcoming, and each session feels inspiring and enriching. It’s not just about learning dance steps, but also about connecting with the tradition, rhythm, and storytelling that Bharatanatyam embodies. Highly recommend this class to anyone interested in classical dance, whether beginner or experienced!

Frequently Asked Questions - Nrityalina Center For Performing Arts

    • 1. I am a complete beginner with zero dance experience. Is that okay?

Absolutely. That is exactly who our adult beginner and kids creative movement classes are designed for. We start from absolute zero: how to stand, how to count 1-2-3, what a mudra is. There is no "entrance exam." We only ask that you come with an open mind and a willingness to be bad at first. Everyone is bad at first. That is how learning works.

    • 2. What do I wear to my first trial class?

For classical forms (Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi): Wear loose, comfortable clothing (leggings and a fitted t-shirt are fine). You do not need a saree or costume. We will provide practice ghunghroo (bells) if needed. For Bollywood: Leggings, joggers, shorts, or jeans (as long as you can move). Barefoot is preferred for all classes to feel the floor and strengthen the feet.

    • 3. Do I need to buy ghunghroos (bells) immediately?

No. We have studio ghunghroos for beginners to borrow. Once you decide to commit to a classical track (after about 4-6 weeks), we will advise you on where to purchase your own pair (usually $30-$50). We do not mark up or force sales of equipment.

    • 4. My child is 4 years old. Can they really learn Bharatanatyam?

At age 4, we focus on creative movement and basic rhythm games. They will learn 3-4 simple mudras, how to walk in a line, and how to freeze. They will not learn a full alarippu at that age. The goal is to build a love for music and movement. Formal adavu (step) training typically begins around age 6 or 7, depending on the child's attention span.

    • 5. I want to learn a specific Bollywood song for my wedding Sangeet. Can you do that?

Yes. We offer private Sangeet choreography packages. You tell us the song (or we suggest one), the number of people in your group (from 2 to 50), and the number of rehearsals you need. We come to your home or you come to our studio. We also offer "Zoom choreography" if your bridal party is spread across different states.

    • 6. How is Nrityalina different from a gym Zumba class?

Zumba is fitness-first, with repetitive movements. Our Bollywood dance classes are choreography-first. You learn a new, unique routine every 2-3 weeks. We focus on technique (how to place your feet, how to hold your hands) and expression (how to look like you mean it). You still get a cardio workout, but you also get a skill. You walk out having actually learned something, not just sweated.

    • 7. Do you offer online classes for students who live outside Jersey City?

Yes, we have a robust live online program via Zoom for Bharatanatyam, Kathak, and Odissi. Students from California, Texas, and even India have taken our online classical classes. We use multiple camera angles (front, side, feet) so you can see everything. We also provide recordings of each class for practice.

    • 8. What is the dress code for the annual recital?

Costumes are provided by the studio or sourced from India through our trusted vendors. We do not require parents to buy expensive costumes from unknown websites. For classical recitals, we typically rent or coordinate a group order to keep costs low ($50-$100 rental fee). For Bollywood, you usually just need black leggings and a colorful top; we provide accessories.

    • 9. I have a knee injury. Can I still dance?

Many of our adult students have knee issues. For Bharatanatyam (which requires a deep squat, aramandi), we offer modifications or suggest Kathak or Odissi instead, which have straighter leg postures. Always consult your doctor first, but our instructors are trained to provide low-impact alternatives. We do not force anyone into painful positions.

    • 10. Will I ever get to perform on a real stage?

Yes. Every student who has completed at least one term (12 weeks) is invited to participate in our Winter Showcase or Spring Recital. We believe performance is essential to building confidence. Even our 4-year-olds get a 30-second spot on stage. For advanced students, we offer the traditional Rangapravesham (solo debut), which is a major milestone akin to a graduation.
