Valluvan Tamil Academy
Valluvan Tamil Academy is dedicated to teaching the Tamil language to children in the United States. Volunteer-run, the school is based in Northern Virginia. The school’s primary activities revolve around our weekly classes, which are held on Saturdays from 1:30-3:30 P.M. In addition, our volunteers also organize and promote activities and events that provide the students with a forum to demonstrate and apply their in-class learning. For the last 12 years, volunteers have been dedicating their time and efforts in teaching children in the area. Classes have been held in public libraries, private homes and other venues. As the demand for Tamil instruction has grown the school has also grown. Students are assigned to courses based upon their age and current knowledge of Tamil. Children who complete our basic courses should be qualified to sit for exams administered by the Tamil Virtual Academy (“TVA”). The TVA is a Tamil language institute formed in Chennai with the help of Tamil Nadu Government to help Tamil education on the web. It conducts standardized exams in Tamil. Our students have the option to sit for the TVA exams at the end of the year. Successful performance in the exams will result in a certificate from the TVA assessing the student’s ability in that level. Pursuant to our current structure a student in the Level 3 course should be able to sit for the basic module of the TVA exam (equivalent to Second Standard/Grade Tamil class in Tamil Nadu). Intermediate/advanced students (level 4 and above) will be learning from both ATA and TVA materials to develop their Tamil fluency.
