Frequently Asked Questions - Singh Driving School

    • 1. How many driving lessons do I need before I am ready for the road test?

This varies dramatically by student. A typical nervous adult needs 8-12 lessons. A typical teen with some parental practice needs 4-6 lessons to refine skills. A complete beginner (never touched a steering wheel) needs 10-15 lessons. An international driver converting a license may need 3-5 lessons focused on Illinois-specific rules. We do NOT sell "packages" that guarantee readiness after a fixed number. We will tell you honestly when you are ready. We would rather you take one extra lesson than fail the test and pay the DMV retest fee ($50) and wait 6-8 weeks for a new appointment.

    • 2. Do you pick me up from my home or school in Naperville?

Yes. We offer free pick-up and drop-off within a 10-mile radius of our Naperville base, including most of Naperville, Aurora (near Route 59), Bolingbrook (east side), Lisle, Wheaton, and Warrenville. We will pick you up from your driveway, your high school (Naperville North, Naperville Central, Neuqua Valley, Waubonsie Valley, Metea Valley), your office, or the Naperville Metra station. The lesson starts the moment you get in the car. We do not waste your time driving to a practice area.

    • 3. What is the difference between the 6-hour certification and regular behind-the-wheel lessons for teens?

Illinois law requires teens with a learner's permit to complete 6 hours of professional behind-the-wheel instruction and 6 hours of observation (watching another student) as part of the driver education program for the graduated driver's license (GDL). This is the legal minimum. Most teens need more than 6 hours to actually become safe, confident drivers. We offer a "6-hour certification package" for the legal requirement, but we strongly recommend additional "practice hours" beyond that. Think of the 6 hours as the absolute floor, not the ceiling.

    • 4. I am an international driver from India. Do I have to start from zero?

No, but you must adapt. You already have vehicle control skills. Your challenges will be specific: (a) Driving on the right side of the road (spatial awareness reversed). (b) Checking blind spots correctly (mirrors are positioned differently). (c) Highway merging (in India, merging is chaotic but slow; in Illinois, it is organized but fast—you must match speed). (d) Illinois-specific laws: right on red (must be a complete stop), four-way stops (first to arrive goes first), school bus laws (stop for flashing red lights even on the opposite side of the road unless there is a median). We offer a specific international driver conversion package (typically 4-6 hours) that focuses only on the differences, not on teaching you to drive from scratch.

    • 5. What happens if I freeze or panic during a lesson?

We pull over immediately. We turn off the car. We talk it through. Our instructors are trained in anxiety de-escalation. You will never be yelled at for being scared. We will ask you what triggered the panic (a large truck? a fast merge? a tailgater?) and then work systematically to desensitize you to that trigger. We have a 100% success rate with nervous drivers. It just takes time. Some students need 2-3 lessons just to sit in the car and drive around a parking lot. That is fine. We do not rush.

    • 6. Do you use a special car for the road test? Can I use my own car?

You can use your own car for the road test, but we strongly recommend using ours. Our cars are equipped with dual brakes (the examiner loves this because they feel safe), have perfect blind-spot visibility, are small/easy to parallel park (Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla), and have no mechanical issues that could cause a failure (e.g., a burned-out light, worn tires, a check-engine light). You can rent one of our cars for the road test for a flat fee (includes an instructor driving you to the DMV, waiting, and the car for the test). This is very popular, especially for students who are nervous about their own car's reliability.

    • 7. What is the "narrated drive" technique you mentioned?

The "narrated drive" is a test-taking strategy. You say out loud every safety action you take: "Checking my left mirror. Checking my right mirror. Looking over my shoulder for the blind spot. Signaling. Slowing down for the stop sign. Coming to a complete stop. Wheels stopped. Counting one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand. I see no cross traffic. I am proceeding. Accelerating smoothly." The examiner cannot read your mind. If you narrate, they KNOW you saw the stop sign and checked the mirror. This single technique prevents 90% of "I checked but they said I didn't" failures. We teach it in every mock exam session.

    • 8. Can I take the defensive driving course online, or do I have to come in person?

Both options are available. Our state-approved defensive driving course (Illinois Driver Safety Course) can be completed 100% online (6 hours of video modules, self-paced, open book quiz). You receive your certificate by email within 48 hours. You then submit it to your insurance company for the discount and to the Illinois Secretary of State for point reduction/ticket dismissal. The online option is cheaper and more convenient. We only require in-person for the behind-the-wheel portion. For the classroom portion of teen driver education (30 hours), that is typically done through the student's high school. We do not offer the 30-hour classroom course.

    • 9. My teenager is very anxious about driving. Should I wait until they are 18?

No. Delaying usually makes anxiety worse because the fear has more time to solidify. The best time to address driving anxiety is when they have their learner's permit (age 15-16). Our instructors specialize in anxious teens. We start in empty parking lots (the Naperville DMV lot on weekends is empty, as is the Frontier Park lot). We do not go on public roads until the student says they are ready. We let them control the pace. Waiting until 18 just means they will be an anxious 18-year-old instead of an anxious 16-year-old, and they will have missed two years of practice opportunities.

    • 10. Do you offer lessons for students with disabilities or special needs?

Yes, on a case-by-case basis. We have experience teaching students with mild autism (who may struggle with interpreting other drivers' intentions or handling unexpected changes), ADHD (who may need help maintaining focus and avoiding distractions), anxiety disorders (as discussed above), and physical disabilities (we can discuss hand controls or other adaptive equipment—we do not have our own adaptive-equipped vehicles, but we can provide lessons in the student's vehicle if it is equipped). Please call us to discuss your specific needs before booking. We will be honest about whether we are the right fit or if you need a specialist.

Welcome to Singh Driving School: Naperville's Most Patient Path to Your Driver's License

Learning to drive is a rite of passage. It is the key to independence for teenagers, a career necessity for adults, and a liberating skill for seniors who have never had the chance. At Singh Driving School, we have made it our mission to transform nervous beginners into confident, competent, and safe drivers. Serving Naperville, Aurora, Bolingbrook, Lisle, Wheaton, and the greater DuPage County area, we are a family-owned and operated driving school that prioritizes patience, clarity, and real-world preparation over speed and volume.

We understand that every student is different. The teenager who has been dreaming of driving since they were 12 learns differently from the adult who has avoided the driver's seat for 20 years. The international professional moving from Mumbai or London to Naperville for work has different challenges from the senior citizen who needs a refresher after years of not driving. At Singh Driving School, we do not use a one-size-fits-all curriculum. We assess your current skill level, your specific fears, and your learning style. Then we build a personalized lesson plan that takes you from wherever you are to wherever you need to be—holding that Illinois driver's license. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

Singh Driving School was founded by instructors who know these roads intimately. We understand local driving patterns, test routes, and the needs of Naperville's diverse community. Our multilingual instructors ensure clear communication for all students.
