About Musical Class By Pallavi Mehta

About Us

Founder Director, Soor Academy, India.

  • One-on-one lessons

Ms. Pallavi Mehta comes to us as a Master of the Sitar, and her absolute dedication and passion for this divine string instrument is beyond question.

Back in Mumbai India, Ms. Pallavi had a large following of students. Starting with one student 36 years ago, the student base grew until she had her own Academy of Music, spending the majority of her time conducting classes in Classical Indian Music, sitar, Indian vocals, Harmonium, and Keyboard.

Ms. Pallavi's ultimate objective is to spread the knowledge of Classical Indian Music far and wide. The opportunity to do that has become a reality now that she has moved to America. She had no idea she would be moving across the street from a music school that has the kind of atmosphere that is perfect for teaching Indian music... beautiful wool carpets of intricate design..just waiting for someone with a sitar to sit on them.

I cannot say enough about this recent addition to Better World Music School. It is an honor and a privilege to have such a fine, talented, experienced musician move across the street and desire to pick up where she left off...

Rated 5.0 I truly consider myself fortunate to learn Hindustani classical vocals from Pallavi didi. I truly admire her legitimate love of music, her warm enthusiastic and patient personality that ensures I learn the most important fundamental elements of music in a systematic fashion and her inspiring teaching method fosters a love singing/music and sets the bar high. She embodies and inculcates discipline so that I truly can be self-sufficient and independent singer/musician. Didi genuinely makes each singing class fun, interesting and empowering. I truly look forward to my weekly singing sessions with my awesome teacher who over a period of 10 months has become a dear friend

Rated 5.0 Didi (Pallavi Mehta) is a joy to learn from. I have been her student since May and have taken exclusively online classes from her. Didi has a long history of teaching and understood clearly the level I entered at. She has a deep repertoire of sitar music and is flexible in her teaching style. In addition to being a knowledgeable and accommodating teacher, she is also a very positive person and I look forward to all of our lessons together.

Rated 5.0 My name is Veena Nair, I joined Soor Academy in 1995, and then moved to Dubai, from where I pursued my learnings with Pallavi Mehta whose tireless effort of teaching even when I was far away in Dubai, it seemed not so far away. An institution in itself has not only brought the beautiful instrument sitar into my life, it also teaches me values of humility. Thank you Pallavi ji for your dedication with me from so faraway.

Rated 5.0 I was always fascinated by the beautiful instrument that Sitar is, I started taking classes in the eleventh standard but that was for a short while as the pressure of my class XII board exams took over. Subsequently I graduated from the National Law School of India University, Bangalore in 2010 and started working at a law firm in Bombay. My fascination for the seven stringed beauty resurfaced and I found an excellent guru in Pallavi didi to guide me in learning the Sitar. My days at Soor Academy have been joyful and merry. However, I shifted to Chennai after a year but I am glad that I have continued to take classes from Pallavi Didi over Skype. I hope my association with Soor Academy lasts for a lifetime.

Rated 5.0 Hello, I am Anuradha Shyam Joshi. I am a housewife and 44 years old. I am truly fond of music and love to play the Sitar. Guruma, Pallavi Mehtaji is training me in Sitar since the last one and half years. I am very satisfied and happy with the kind of training imparted to me through her training process. I am very happy to have such a 'Guru'. Due to her encouragement, friendly and cooperative nature, I am able to travel from Chiplun (Ratnagiri, Konkan) to take monthly lessons at the Soor Academy without any hassles.

Frequently Asked Questions - Musical Class By Pallavi Mehta

    • 1. I am a complete beginner. I do not know what "sa re ga ma" means. Can I still join?

Yes. That is exactly who Pallavi's beginner vocal class is for. She starts from the absolute basics: what is a note, how to sit, how to breathe, how to produce a clean sound. No prior knowledge assumed.

    • 2. Do I need to buy a tanpura or harmonium immediately?

No. For vocal students, you can use a free smartphone app (Tanpura Droid or iTablaPro) for the drone. For harmonium students, you will eventually need an instrument, but Pallavi can advise you on where to buy an affordable student harmonium (200−400). She does not sell instruments; she gives you a list of trusted vendors.

    • 3. What is the difference between Hindustani vocal and bhajan singing?

Hindustani vocal is classical music: raags, taans, alankars. It is more technical. Bhajan singing is devotional music: simpler melodies, no complex ornamentation, focus on emotion. You can learn bhajans without any classical training. However, learning some classical (swaras, alankars) will make your bhajan singing much better (more accurate pitch, better voice control).

    • 4. How much daily practice is required?

Beginners (children or adults): 15-20 minutes per day, 5 days a week. Intermediate: 30-45 minutes per day. Advanced: 60+ minutes per day. Pallavi will assign specific practice exercises each week. Consistency is more important than duration. Practicing 15 minutes daily is better than 2 hours once a week.

    • 5. Do you teach children as young as 4?

Yes, but with a modified curriculum. For ages 4-6, Pallavi offers a "Little Gurus" program: 20-minute lessons, focus on rhythm games, call-response singing, and simple Hindi rhymes. Formal swara and alankar training begins at age 6-7. The goal for little ones is joy, not rigor.

    • 6. Can I learn Bollywood singing without learning classical?

Yes. Pallavi can teach you specific Bollywood songs (using the correct pitch and expression). However, she recommends at least a few months of classical foundation (swaras, alankars) because it will make your Bollywood singing much stronger. Students who skip classical often struggle with high notes, breath control, and staying on pitch.

    • 7. Do you teach group classes or only one-on-one?

Pallavi teaches one-on-one only (except for occasional group bhajan workshops). She believes that individualized attention is essential for vocal training. Each student's voice is different. She adjusts her teaching to your specific needs.

    • 8. I have a cold or allergies. Can I still have a lesson?

Yes, but with modifications. Pallavi will focus on lighter exercises (humming, mid-range notes) and avoid demanding taans. She can also teach you breathing exercises to clear your sinuses. If you are too sick to sing, she will reschedule without penalty (please cancel at least 2 hours before).

    • 9. Do students perform in recitals?

Twice a year (winter and spring), Pallavi organizes a student recital at a local venue. Participation is optional but encouraged. Beginners perform a short bhajan or alankar (1-2 minutes). Advanced students perform a full bandish (5-10 minutes). The recital is low-pressure, supportive, and family-friendly.

    • 10. I am Hindu but do not speak Hindi. Can I still learn bhajans?

Yes. Pallavi teaches you the pronunciation (phonetically) even if you do not understand the words. However, she will also explain the meaning of each bhajan, so you can sing with emotion (bhava). Many of her students are not fluent in Hindi.
