Sureela
We practice attuning the mind, body, and spirit through Sangeet: movement, rhythm, and melody. Sureela students and ensemble members learn about South Asian philosophy, history, religion, literature and mathematics through the performing arts, focusing on North Indian classical kathak dance. Sarah has studied South Asian performing arts since 1992. Between 1993 and 1995, she spent a year in South India (Madurai, Tamil Nadu) studying Karnatak music, Tamil language and culture. After a year of graduate study at the University of Pennsylvania, Sarah began a doctoral program in ethnomusicology at Harvard University (Ph.D. 2007) where she focused on North Indian classical dance and music. Pandit Chitresh Das was a true master of the art of kathak dance whose legacy is as multi-faceted as it is powerful. His tireless dedication to the art brought virtuosic solo performances, revolutionary collaborations, and innovative teaching to the world. Pandit Das viewed kathak as a way of life, a service to society, and a path to self-knowledge.
