John Thomas leads our Real Estate practice group, comprising more than 150 lawyers worldwide. John has a diverse transactional practice representing corporate clients in a variety of sophisticated business transactions. His practice includes real estate lending, development and acquisition, acting as corporate counsel to technology companies, general commercial contracting and asset acquisition and sale. John has extensive experience representing borrowers and lenders in corporate finance, commercial real estate, senior living facilities and international energy projects. He is recognized as a leader in the senior living finance industry, having represented lenders in more than one hundred financing transactions for senior living communities including acquisition and construction loans, tax exempt bond financings, mezzanine loans and private placements of debt and equity. His finance experience includes significant loan restructuring work. In addition, John has significant experience in general corporate work representing technology companies, with special emphasis in the online advertising and open source software industries. His experience includes negotiating venture capital transactions, licensing, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate organizational matters. Prior to joining Squire Patton Boggs, John acted as general counsel for Artery Properties, Inc., and he has worked in a non-legal capacity for Washington DC-area developers and managers of commercial real estate.
