Babu Kaza’s practice focuses on investigations and white collar criminal defense. He is a former attorney with the US Department of Justice (DOJ) National Security Division, Office of Intelligence, where he handled complex and highly sensitive national security investigations, and conducted oversight of the US intelligence community. He previously served as an officer in the US Marine Corps, where he was lead counsel for multiple high-profile criminal cases at the trial and appellate levels.Babu is an experienced litigator, with a wealth of experience in criminal practice and government investigations. At the DOJ, Babu worked closely with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other government agencies to collect intelligence on suspected spies and terrorists, while ensuring compliance with all constitutional, statutory and court-ordered requirements.Before joining the DOJ, Babu served on active-duty in the US Marine Corps, and is presently a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve. Babu has served as a prosecutor, defense counsel, supervisory attorney and commander, and taught law as an adjunct professor at the Naval Academy. While deployed to Iraq, he was assigned to conduct critical investigations into allegations of friendly fire, detainee abuse and potential war crimes.Among his high-profile cases, he prosecuted a senior officer for crimes related to the suicide of a Muslim recruit during basic training, and prosecuted a Naval Academy professor who engaged in sexual misconduct with students. As a defense counsel, he handled appellate litigation for the purported ringleaders of the Haditha and Hamdania killings, two of the most significant war crimes cases from the Iraq war, winning a full reversal in the Hamdania case of all convictions, including murder, and securing his client’s release from prison.
