Initially, I was frustrated with my parents for not teaching me English in India, and I struggled with the language barrier. However, I now appreciate that my parents taught me Gujarati and Hindi, which allows me to fluently communicate with those who cannot speak English. It also keeps me connected to my cultural heritage and provides me with a sense of belonging and identity. Being proficient in these languages also creates opportunities for me to communicate and exchange culture with family, friends, and communities who speak them.
