From the Business:Moumita Banerjee is very passionate about Kathak Dance and started learning kathak dance (in Jaipur Gharana) at the age of five under Smt. Susmita Chakraborty in Calcutta. She earned her Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.) degree from Banaras Hindu University (Varanasi, India), one of the largest and prestigious university in Asia. She was awarded with Gold Medal for securing 1st position in the University. She also completed Prabhakar degree (Similar to bachelor’s degree in Kathak dance) and Senior Diploma in Kathak with distinction from Prayag Sangeet Samiti (Allahabad, India) She received her Master of Performing Arts (MPA) degree in Kathakk dance in Lucknow Gharana from Bhatkhande Music Institute (Deemed University, Lucknow). She har learned under legendary Gurus like Prof. Kumkum Dhar, Prof. Bina Singh, and Prof. Ranjana Srivastava. She also completed workshop training with late Pandit Birju Maharaj, leading exponent of Lucknow gharana of Kathak and Ashimbandhu Bhattacharjee. She has been a performer for many years, performing and Choreographing in India and in USA (Florida, Texas, and Massachusetts) at various organizations and festivals. Her students also performed in many programs in Greater Boston community such as Essence of India, Acton; IAGB; IAB; Sai rainbow; Boston Children Museum and many other places. With prior teaching experience in India and in USA, Moumita is glad to share her dance experience with children and adults who love Kathak as much as she does. Kathak is one of the major forms of classical dance of India with its origins in Northern India. The name Kathak is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘katha' which means ‘story' and the one who tells the stories is called ‘Kathak'. Kathak is found in three Gharanas-Jaipur, Banaras, and Lucknow Gharana from the cities where the Kathak dance tradition evolved. After working for 20 years in India as a branch head of alma mater Maneesha Nrityalaya, Shambhavi established SISK in 2010. Soon after, she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area with her family.
